Verizon today announced that they've started offering customers the option of paying $99.99 for unlimited domestic calling. The announcement somewhat steals the thunder from Sprint, who has been working on an unlimited calling plan of their own. The pricing isn't as hot (or as simple) as leaks had suggested. As most of us now know, we are in the midst of a digital TV transition that requires consumers to go digital no later than one year from today. In order to help with the transition, the government is offering coupons to help offset the cost of having to purchase the necessary converter boxes. The government started taking applications for those coupons last month. They received requests for over 5 million coupons and now say that they will be starting to mail out those coupons this week. The coupons are only good for ninety days and consumers may only get two per household; applications may still be made online.

Despite a recent push in the format wars to support HD DVD, it looks like Blu-Ray just might win out as the high-definition format of choice. Once the major studios had settled on their preferred formats, the war went to the retailers and HD product makers. Recent announcements from retailers include that Netflix and Walmart will both stop carrying HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray. The most recent rumor is that Toshiba is going to soon cease its HD DVD production altogether, effectively sealing the end of the format wars. This will allow the market to move forward with Blu-ray products.
