PC World notes that Japanese ISP will begin offering symmetrical 1Gbps connections for ¥5,460 (US$51.40) per month starting in October. The new service, cheaper than connections one-tenth as fast, will be made available to single-dwelling homes and apartment buildings up to three floors high in the Tokyo area and Hokkaido island in north Japan. KDDI's current fiber-optic service offers symmetrical 100Mbps for ¥6,615 ($63) while the broadly available 10Mbps DSL service costs around ¥4,599 (43).

As most of us now know, we are in the midst of a digital TV transition that requires consumers to go digital no later than one year from today. In order to help with the transition, the government is offering coupons to help offset the cost of having to purchase the necessary converter boxes. The government started taking applications for those coupons last month. They received requests for over 5 million coupons and now say that they will be starting to mail out those coupons this week. The coupons are only good for ninety days and consumers may only get two per household; applications may still be made online.
